Rebuilding a caliper instead of replacing it paid off big time
A lot of mechanics I work with always say to buy new calipers when one seizes up. I took a chance and rebuilt the rear caliper on my neighbor's old Camry. It only took a cheap kit and some elbow grease, and now it stops like new. This little win has me sure that repair is often better than replacement.

Remember when fixing a busted window regulator felt like unlocking a secret level? That's the same vibe as bringing a caliper back to life. We're basically being mechanics instead of parts changers, and it rules. My buddy's old Civic runs on rebuilt everything from alternators to blower motors. Stuff just lasts when you put real work into it.

Calling it a "lost skill" seems over the top. Most folks just want their car fixed without the hassle.

Totally agree that repair is often better than replacement. It applies to so much more than just calipers too, like power window motors or even whole alternators. The whole "just swap the part" mindset has taken over, and it feels like a lost skill. Plus there's a weird satisfaction in fixing the actual broken thing instead of just throwing a new box at it.
