Service manager said my diag write-ups were useless to the guy doing the repair
I used to just write stuff like "runs rough, check it out" on my tickets and figured the repair tech would find whatever it was. About 4 months into my first dealer job in Reno, the service manager pulled me aside and asked if I would want to work off notes that vague, and honestly he had a point. Now I write down the code I pulled, the freeze frame data, and what I actually heard or felt on the test drive before I hand anything off. It adds maybe 5 minutes per car but the comeback rate on my jobs dropped off a cliff after that. Curious if you all have a set format you use for diag notes or do you just write whatever comes to mind?
Is it really that big of a deal though? Most techs I know can figure out a rough running car in their sleep, and a code reader tells you the same thing your notes do anyway. Spending 5 extra minutes per ticket adds up fast when you're flat rate, and that's money out of your own pocket. The service manager has a point about vague notes, sure, but there's a big gap between "check it out" and writing a whole essay about freeze frame data. Maybe the comeback drop had nothing to do with your notes and everything to do with you just getting better at the job after 4 months. I'd want to see way more proof before I changed how I write tickets.
