Took me 5 years to figure out I was overtorquing lug nuts
Pulled into a shop in Phoenix last month for a tire rotation. Guy comes out and says three of my studs are stretched. I always used a torque wrench. Set it to 100 ft-lbs like the manual says. He asked if I used anti-seize. I did. Every time. He said subtract 20% next time. Nobody ever told me that. Felt like an idiot. How do you handle lubed threads on your torque specs?

Yep, learned that one the hard way too. Anti-seize basically turns your torque reading into a lie. I just subtract 15-20% now and call it good. Never had a problem since.

What kind of bolt are you usually doing this on, steel or aluminum?

Oh man, "torque reading is a lie" is the perfect way to put it. @webb.ben I learned that the HARD way on some stainless bolts, stripped a hole and everything before I wised up. Now I just subtract 20% every time and it's been smooth sailing since.
