Why does nobody talk about how a scanner class at the Des Moines vo-tech taught me more than 2 years of parts swapping
I used to be the guy who just threw parts at a car until the light went out, and I figured that was how everybody worked. Then I sat in a 6 hour night class in Des Moines back in March and the instructor made us read live data on a 2008 Civic with a lean code before touching a single part. Turns out I had been guessing at fuel trims for a long time and calling it experience. How many of you out there still grab the parts cannon first, and what finally got you to slow down and look at the numbers?
Small correction, reading fuel trims isnt really the same as a scanner class, tons of us were already watching trims before live data was easy to pull up on a cheap phone app. The class part that actually matters is someone making you sit there and think about what the numbers mean instead of just staring at them. Guys grab the parts cannon because nobody ever walked them through the why, not because they never saw the data. Glad the 6 hours clicked for you though, a good teacher beats a fancy tool every time.
