A ramp lead in Tulsa told me to quit twisting wire bundles so tight, and I fought him on it for 3 planes
I always thought tighter lacing meant cleaner runs and less chafing, so when he said I was pinching the harness near the connector backshells I just nodded and kept doing it my way. He pulled one of my bundles off a 737 and showed me the insulation starting to rub through after 40 flight hours, and now I lace with a little slack and check every backshell with a mirror. Anybody else get told their tidy work was actually the problem?
I read a NTSB report a while back about a chafed harness that rubbed through and caused a fuel gauge to go nuts mid-flight. Seems like the fix was the same thing your lead said, leave a little slack so the wires can move without grinding on each other. Tight looks nice on the card but the vibration always wins in the end.
