An old lead in Tulsa told me my solder joints looked like cold garbage, so I changed one thing
Six months ago I was doing a nav light harness rewire on a Cessna and the lead avionics guy watched me for two minutes, then said my iron was running too cold so I was basically smearing solder instead of flowing it. I had it set at 600 degrees because I was scared of burning the wire, but he bumped it to 700 and showed me how the solder should wick in shiny within a second. I went back and redid all 14 pins and the difference was night and day, no more dull gray blobs. Now I keep a scrap wire on the bench and test my iron on it before I touch anything on the plane. Anybody else got a temp they swear by for 22 gauge shielded stuff?
