Firmware updates felt like a time sink until a slow one proved me wrong

I rushed them to hit tight schedules. A messed up update cost us a full day of ground time. Now I build in buffer time for every install.

Tell me about it. Rushed a POS update once thinking it would be fine. System was down for three hours during the lunch rush. Pure chaos, never again.

What did you do to handle the orders while the system was down?

Always run updates on a test terminal during off hours first. We had a similar mess when a payment bug crashed our registers. Now we do a full system check on Sunday before open. Keep old hardware as a quick backup just in case.
