Found out a shocking stat about wiring harness failures yesterday

I came across a report saying 80% of avionics failures are actually from bad connections, not bad units. That was at a training seminar last week. Has anyone else seen numbers like that in their own work?

Wait, are you saying that many bad connections don't count as wiring harness failures... seems like that's exactly what a harness failure is if the wire or pin is the problem.

80% seems like one of those numbers that sounds right until you actually look at the data. I've been around long enough to know that a lot of those stats get pulled from specific cases that don't match real world conditions. Most techs I've worked with would tell you half the time it's just a loose pin or corrosion, but labeling that as a "wiring harness failure" feels like a stretch. Plus, that 80% figure probably comes from one manufacturer's internal study on their own stuff, not a general rule. I'd want to see the actual repair logs broken down by root cause before buying into it that heavily.

Good point @alice269, these stats get thrown around way too loosely.
