Had to choose between two different crimpers for a D-sub connector job last week

The cheap one from the truck made a mess of the pins, but the old Mil-spec tool I borrowed from the hangar next door did it perfect on the first try. The difference was all in the ratchet mechanism, you could feel it seat right. Anyone have a go-to brand for those that won't bankrupt you?

Read a forum post once where a guy called the ratchet feel on a good crimper the "click of confidence." That stuck with me. The cheap ones always seem to mush over before they actually finish the crimp. There's a used tool place near me that sometimes has old Phelps or Erem stuff for not too much, worth keeping an eye out.

My old boss swore by his Paladin crimper for years.

Did he ever let anyone else use it, or was it his precious?
