That fancy test cable I bought for $350 was a complete dud
Picked up a new coax test cable from a supplier last month to calibrate a DME box on a CRJ. Hooked it up and got wild VSWR readings that made no sense until I checked the cable with an ohm meter. Anyone else run into supplier gear that was bad out of the box and just wasted your time?

Check the connector pins first thing on any new cable, I've had brand new ones where the center pin just wasn't making contact.

Not sure I'd call it a widespread issue. Might be some bad luck with specific batches but most new cables work fine out of the box. Checking pins isn't bad advice but it's not the first thing I'd worry about unless you're having signal problems.

Oh yeah, same here had a brand new cable that tested bad right out of the packaging.
