Tips for setting up a home bench for avionics repair?

Good lighting is key, I learned that the hard way.

Avionics repair at home? That sounds like a big jump. Most airplane parts have strict rules for who can fix them. For example, a simple radio might need special tools just to open it up. Without the right paperwork, you could end up with a part that's not allowed back on a plane. It's not like fixing a car stereo where you can just swap parts. Maybe start with smaller projects to see if it's worth the hassle.

My buddy Steve tried to fix a Garmin transponder in his garage last year. Spent 300 bucks on parts before finding out his fix was useless without a certified shop's stamp. Now it's just a fancy paperweight on his bench.

Yeah the "fancy paperweight" thing is so real. Reminds me of my cousin trying to rebuild a CB750 engine in his apartment living room. Got the whole thing in pieces on a tarp, bought all the gaskets and rings, spent weeks on it. Got it back together and it just pumped oil out onto the floor. Turns out he forgot some alignment step with the cases. Sometimes the know-how is the most expensive part.
