Warning: spent 2 days chasing a glitchy EGPWS that ended up being a 40 cent wire
Three weeks ago at our hangar in Wichita I pulled a 737 classic in for a pesky terrain warning fault that kept popping in the log. I was ready to swap the EGPWS computer, had the part on order and everything, because that was my go to move for a while. Then a guy on nights named Dale asked if I had done a wiggle test on the connector pins going into the LRU, and I kinda brushed him off at first. Turns out one pin in the J1 plug was backing out just enough to lose contact when the airframe heated up in the sun. I re crimped it, put new pins in the whole plug for 40 cents worth of parts, and the fault never came back in 6 test flights. I used to just blame the black box every time, now I actually check the wiring first. Anybody else got a story where the fix was way smaller than the fault made it look?
