Always thought I could just wing it with a paper map until a trip in the White Mountains...
Got turned around for three hours trying to find a trail junction that was clearly marked on my phone's GPS map. The paper one I brought was from 2008 and didn't show the reroute. Anyone have a go-to app or GPS unit they trust more than old maps?

2008? That map is old enough to drive.

Ngl, @the_eric is right that 2008 map is basically a relic at this point, but I'd push back a little on the GPS idea. Those things can fail you too if you don't download the offline tiles before you lose signal. I run Gaia GPS on my phone and it's been solid for finding trail junctions in the Whites, but I always carry a current paper map from the AMC as a backup. The 2024 edition has all the reroutes from the past few years, like the one around the washed out section on the Kinsman Ridge Trail.
