Appreciation post: The 45-minute map fold in a Wyoming windstorm

Trying to refold my paper map on the Teton Crest Trail with 30 mph gusts turned into a full-on slapstick routine, complete with me chasing it down a meadow. Anyone have a foolproof method for windy map reading?

Maybe try folding the map inside your jacket like a tent. It creates a little wind block and you can still see it. I saw a guide do that once and it looked way easier.

Always thought you needed to see the whole map, but those little corner weights you clip on actually work. Changed my whole windy ridge game.

Ugh, I feel your pain. I ended up sitting right on the thing. Just plopped down on the trail and used my legs and the ground to pin all the corners. It looked stupid but it worked. I traced my route with a finger while the wind just whipped over my back. Had to re-fold it later in the tent.
