Choosing between the Eagle Rock Loop and the Ozark Highlands Trail last spring

I had a free weekend in April and couldn't decide between the 26-mile Eagle Rock Loop in Arkansas or the first 40-mile section of the Ozark Highlands Trail. I went with Eagle Rock for the river crossings and it was perfect, though the water was pretty high. Has anyone else done both and have a strong preference for one over the other?

Oh man, don't even get me started. Tried that last spring, thought I was being smart. My boots filled up so fast it was like wearing buckets. Spent the next hour squelching around town looking like a drowned rat. Honestly, my socks were never the same.

What did you do about your boots for the river crossings? I just brought a pair of cheap water shoes and swapped them at each crossing. Kept my hiking boots and socks totally dry in my pack. It takes a few extra minutes but it's way better than hiking in wet boots all day.
