Hiked the Eagle Creek trail in Oregon 3 years apart and the washed out bridge changed my whole route plan
Last month I went back and the trail was 2.5 miles shorter because a 2017 fire took out the old bridge, so now you have to climb 900 feet extra to get around it. Anyone else had a route you loved get totally changed by a closure like that?
Man, I feel this. I did the Timberline Loop a few years back and a washout near Zigzag forced this long detour up through the moraine, added like 3 hours and a ton of loose rock I was not ready for. My best tip is to check the Forest Service site the week before you go, not just AllTrails, because the app lagged like a month behind on that closure. Also build in a buffer day if you can, since reroutes almost always run longer than the sign says. If you're going back to Eagle Creek, the climb around the missing bridge is no joke, so maybe start earlier than you think you need to.
