I finally admit the AT thru-hike hype is real

Tbh I spent years rolling my eyes at people who talked about the Appalachian Trail like it was some life-changing thing. Then I did a 50-mile section in Virginia last fall and honestly I get it now, the trail towns and random trail magic hit different. Has anyone else felt dumb for being such a skeptic about a popular route?

Spent ten years mocking it, then cried over a trail angel's Snickers bar.

That Snickers moment really is something else... I didn't cry over a candy bar but I nearly lost it when a trail angel handed me a cold Gatorade at the bottom of a long climb. What worked for me was just letting myself feel all the stupid emotions without fighting them. It's like your body and mind are so worn down that the smallest kindness just breaks through everything. Accepting that it's okay to get emotional out there actually made the rest of the hike easier for me. Just let it happen, it's part of the experience.
