I thought the 'no campfires' rule on the Lost Coast Trail was overkill
Did the 25 mile stretch last fall and was annoyed we couldn't have a fire at the beach campsites. But after seeing the huge driftwood piles and how dry everything gets, it made total sense. Plus, the stars were way better without smoke. Anyone else have a trail rule they doubted that turned out to be a good call?

Is your argument that a small fire on the sand is fine, or that the whole rule is just for show? I get the frustration, but after seeing how fast that dry driftwood burns up there, I don't blame them one bit. The wind can whip up out of nowhere too, I had dust blowing in my face one minute and then a quiet calm the next. The whole coast is just one big fire hazard waiting for a spark. I'd rather miss out on a campfire than watch the whole place go up in smoke, you know?

Still think it's overkill for coastal areas. That sea breeze keeps things damp most nights, and a small, contained fire on wet sand poses little risk. The rule treats experienced backpackers like careless tourists, removing a classic part of the backcountry experience for no good reason.
