Rant: The JMT is overrated compared to the Sierra High Route

Everyone raves about the John Muir Trail but I did it last summer and honestly the crowds were insane. I tried the Sierra High Route a few weeks later and it was way more remote with better views of the same mountains. Has anyone else found a lesser known route that beats the popular one?

It's funny you mention the crowds cause I did Half Dome a few years back and got stuck behind this guy who was literally filming every single step with a GoPro on a stick. Took him like 20 minutes to go like 100 feet. Meanwhile I'm just trying to enjoy the granite and not trip over my own feet. But the High Route thing reminds me of this time my buddy and I tried to find this random lake on a map that wasn't even named, just a blue blob. We hiked like 8 hours through talus fields and ended up at this perfect spot where the fish were practically jumping into our laps. Never even saw another person for three days. That's the kind of trip that makes you wonder why you ever bother with the popular stuff.

Nah, the crowds on the JMT are part of the fun for me.
