Took a hammock instead of a tent on the Appalachian Trail last month...

I figured I'd save weight but ended up sleeping on the ground under a tarp for three nights because every decent tree spot was already taken, so I guess I learned that popularity of the route matters more than gear choice.

That's a hammock problem more than a popularity problem. You gotta practice hanging it a few times at home before you trust it on the trail.
