Bought a cheap $40 fire pit from a big box store and it rusted out in 6 months

I grabbed this round steel fire pit from the hardware store back in March thinking I was saving money. By September the bottom had rusted through so bad embers were falling onto my patio pavers. Had to replace it with a $200 cast iron one from a local shop that should actually last. Anyone else get burned by cheap outdoor gear falling apart after one season?

Did you coat it with high-temp paint first?

Yeah high temp paint is a must or it just flakes off.

I painted my $40 special with high temp paint right out of the box and it still bubbled up and peeled off after two burns. @the_derek is right that it's a must, but on those cheap steel bowls the metal is so thin it doesn't matter what you coat it with. Mine ended up with a hole the size of a golf ball after a few months of regular use.
