My neighbor said to put shade cloth over my patio last July but I didn't listen until August

My neighbor Carl told me back in June that I should get some shade cloth for my south-facing patio before the real heat hit. I thought it would be fine since I have a big umbrella out there. By mid-August the sun was blasting that concrete from noon until 5pm and the umbrella just wasn't cutting it. The patio was too hot to walk on barefoot and all my potted plants were wilting by 2pm every day. I finally went out and bought a 12x20 foot shade cloth from the hardware store for about 40 bucks. Now the temp difference is huge and I can actually sit out there again. Has anyone else dealt with a neighbor giving advice you should have taken sooner?

Learned that lesson myself with a cheap umbrella and a fried patio.

Exactly how I used to feel about those cheap umbrellas till I saw a buddy's whole patio setup get wrecked in a light breeze. Changed my mind real quick after that, and @finleym43 I bet you've seen some similar damage.

That "fried patio" bit got my attention. Was it one of those cheapo umbrellas with the fiberglass ribs that snapped in a gust and sent the pole straight into the ground? I've seen that happen to a neighbor, and it left a nasty scorch mark on their concrete where the metal rod touched down.
