Patio pavers vs poured concrete, the $2,800 stat that got me

Read that a 400 sq ft poured slab costs about $2,800 but pavers run closer to $5,200, before labor, from some landscaping site out of Phoenix. I grew up thinking concrete was the budget king, but now I'm wondering if pavers win on not cracking after the first freeze, anyone else lean one way for a Midwest backyard?

Whoa, hold on, $2,800 for a whole slab? That number seems crazy low to me. I just got quotes for a tiny 300 sq ft pad and it was closer to $4,500, and that was before they even talked about rebar or gravel. I bet that Phoenix number is for like a flat, no-frills, desert slab where they don't have to dig down 4 feet for frost lines. Up here in the Midwest, you're paying for the excavation and the thick base just to keep the thing from heaving, plus the concrete mix is stiffer and pricier. So yeah, pavers might cost more upfront, but at least when one does crack, you just pop it out and replace it. Concrete does that too, but then you're stuck with a patch that looks like a scar, or you're paying for a whole new pour.
