Pro tip: a $6 bag of paver sand stopped the washout under my downspout, but only after I wasted a whole Saturday
Last Saturday I finally got fed up with the little river that runs across my patio every time it rains. The downspout on the corner of the house dumps right onto the slab, and for two years now it has carved a groove that holds water and grows a nice crop of moss. I tried a splash block from the hardware store on Main in Springfield, and the water just shot over it and made the groove deeper. I spent most of that afternoon dragging bags of topsoil around and ruined a decent pair of jeans. My neighbor Ray watched me struggle for about an hour and then said the splash block was fine, I just needed to build up a little berm so the water goes out to the grass. I grabbed a $6 bag of paver sand and packed a small slope on each side of the block, and the washout stopped overnight. Now I check that berm after every heavy rain like a hawk. Does anyone else have a spot where the water finds a way no matter what you put in front of it?
