Shoutout to my neighbor Larry for the shade sail tip
Larry put up a 16 foot shade sail in his backyard three summers ago and his patio stays 10 degrees cooler than mine during peak July heat. I finally copied him last month with a triangle sail from the local hardware store and man it makes a difference. The key is angling the low corner toward the west sun like he showed me. Has anyone else tried angling theirs different directions?

Whoa wait, 10 degrees cooler? That's wild, I figured it was like a few degrees at most. I mean, I knew shade helps but that's a massive difference for just one sail. Maybe it's just me but I always thought those things were more for blocking the sun's glare than actually dropping the temp that much. I gotta rethink my whole setup now because I've been fighting with the angle on mine and I might just be doing it totally wrong. Idk, now I'm wondering if I should just go ask my neighbor for help too.

Dude yes! I had the exact same wake up call last summer. I hung a big sail over my patio and I was shocked when I actually checked the thermometer under it versus out in the sun. I was like no way this is 12 degrees cooler but it was. I think most people underestimate how much direct sunlight heats up the ground and everything around you. I was fighting with my angle too for weeks until I realized the steeper the better for blocking the sun at its peak. I ended up watching like three YouTube videos and then just copied some neighbor's setup I walked past. It's honestly a game changer once you get it right.
