Sod vs. seed, spent $800 on sod and the bare dirt patch I ignored grew better grass

I laid high quality sod on my new patio border back in March and it browned out by June, while the patch of plain dirt where I dumped old seed grew a thick lawn with zero effort, so is the money worth it or is the secret just to do nothing?
