That time my old patio umbrella took flight in a thunderstorm
Just last spring a surprise gust caught my 10 foot umbrella during a cookout, sent it sailing into the neighbors fence and snapped the pole clean in half. Ended up drilling the new one's base into a heavy concrete planter, has anyone else had to anchor theirs down after a bad gust?

Ugh that just happened to me last month, watching your expensive umbrella turn into a kite is the worst. I ended up using sandbags on my stand after mine took out a tomato plant.

Oh wow, that is exactly the kind of thing that makes you want to scream! I had the same thing happen last summer with a brand new patio umbrella. It was a gusty afternoon and I thought I had it locked down tight, but nope, it flipped right over and knocked over a ceramic planter my daughter gave me. I learned my lesson and now I use two of those heavy-duty sandbags on the base. It feels a little overkill but I haven't lost another umbrella since.

Yeah @eva_adams68, I feel your pain, mine took out a whole row of hostas before it wedged under the deck.
