Why does everyone put pavers straight on sand without a base layer
After pulling up 3 sections of my patio in Tucson last week that sunk 2 inches in the middle from monsoon runoff, I found the original installer just dumped sand over dirt and set the pavers, so why spend an afternoon digging 6 inches down for crushed gravel when that half inch of sand is what everyone I know keeps bragging about?

That sand just hides the problem until the next big rain.
