Am I the only one who thinks raised beds are a waste of money for most backyard growers?
Everyone in my local garden group in Columbus pushes raised beds like they are the only way to grow anything. I built two cedar beds three summers ago and spent about $310 on wood, soil mix, and hardware. My in ground plot that I dug out with a shovel and mixed in compost from my bins has out produced those beds every single season. The beds dry out faster in July, the soil cooks in full sun, and I am out there watering twice a day while my ground rows are fine. Last year I pulled 42 pounds of tomatoes from the ground plot and 19 from the beds, same varieties, same starts. I still use one bed for carrots since my clay soil is rough on them, but for peppers, squash, and tomatoes it has not been close. Has anyone else compared yields side by side like this, or am I doing something off with my bed mix?
