DAE have a week where the garden just goes nuts? Mine did in June
Three weeks into June I picked 41 tomatoes off six plants, more than the rest of the month combined. Same beds, same watering, the only thing I did different was toss grass clippings down as mulch after a hot stretch hit 98 here in Fresno. Then the squash bugs showed up on day five and took out two zucchini overnight, so the win came with a bill. I pulled the mulch back off the squash and dusted with diatomaceous earth, and they slowed down but did not quit. Anyone got something that actually works on squash bugs once they are already in the bed?
Man, that Fresno heat is no joke, and I bet the grass clippings did two things at once: held in water and gave the squash bugs a cool shady place to party. That is the trap nobody talks about, mulch helps tomatoes but squash bugs love hiding under it, so pulling it back was smart. Have you tried going after the eggs instead of the bugs? Flip every leaf and scrape the little bronze egg clusters into a jar of soapy water, do it every three days for two weeks and you break the cycle. The adults are almost impossible to kill once they are out, but if you keep smashing the next wave before it hatches you can usually save the fall crop. A shop vac on the adults in the early morning when they are slow also works better than any spray I have bought.
