Dropped $60 on a soil test kit and it changed my whole approach

I always figured my backyard dirt was fine for tomatoes, but after that kit showed my pH was way off and nitrogen nearly gone, I finally understood why my plants kept struggling. Has anyone else had a soil test completely flip what you thought you knew about your garden?

@daniel474 brings up a good point about people who just overwater, but the soil itself is a whole different ballgame. I read an article from our state extension office that said most home gardens are missing key nutrients because we don't rotate crops or add compost regularly. The kit showed my soil was so compacted that roots couldn't breathe, which explained why my peppers were stunted. A neighbor of mine spent years adding lime to his garden because his dad always did, but the test showed his pH was already too high. Sometimes we follow old habits that make things worse instead of better.

Thing is, plants grow in dirt all over the world without fancy kits.

Buddy of mine killed every plant he ever watered.
