Finally figured out why my tomatoes kept splitting open

I've been growing tomatoes in my backyard in Nashville for about 4 summers now, and every year I'd get these big beautiful fruits that would just crack open right before I could pick them. It was driving me nuts. Last July I tried something different after reading a random blog - I started watering them at the same time every morning instead of whenever I remembered, and I put a thick layer of straw mulch around the base to keep the soil moisture steady. Turns out inconsistent watering was making the skins expand and contract too fast. Has anyone else dealt with splitting tomatoes and found a fix that worked for them?

Funny you mention that, cause this whole thing with the tomatoes got me thinking about how many problems in life are really just about steadiness... like with my car, if I let the gas get real low before filling up, it runs rough for a day. Same with my sleep schedule on weekends, staying up late then sleeping in throws me off for Monday. Your tomatoes are the same way with water, they just want consistency not surprises. It's that in-between zone nobody tells you about... not too much not too little just the same thing at the same time. Kinda applies to a lot of stuff once you start looking for it.
