Found a cheap way to keep slugs off my lettuce without spending on copper tape

My lettuce bed was getting demolished every night by slugs and I was about to give up after losing 3 whole rows over two weeks. Then I remembered my grandma used to put crushed eggshells around her plants, so I tried it with shells from my own kitchen. I saved up about 2 dozen eggshells, crushed them into sharp bits, and circled each plant with a thick ring. It's been 10 days now and the slugs are staying away, plus the shells break down and add calcium to the soil. Has anyone else tried something from the kitchen that actually beat a pest problem?

Eggshells work great as a barrier, but they have to be crushed really fine. Big chunks still let slugs crawl right over them. Your grandma knew what she was doing with that thick ring of sharp bits.

Yeah @the_mila nailed it, gotta grind those shells down almost to powder or slugs find their way through.
