Had to choose between saving my carrots or my beans from the squirrels last week

I spent 30 minutes watching a fat gray squirrel dig up my carrot seedlings while my bean trellis was getting torn apart by its buddy. I ran to save the beans because they were closer to blooming, but the carrots ended up wrecked. Anyone else have to pick which crop to protect when the critters attack?

Got any tips for stopping squirrels without hurting them? I started using cayenne pepper on my soil and it kept them off my tomatoes this year.

Oh PLEASE, cayenne pepper is just giving them a spicy snack and they'll be back for more once they figure it out.

Cayenne pepper worked fine on my garden beds for years without a single squirrel coming back.
