I finally listened about the zucchini crowding thing
My neighbor Rick from three plots down kept telling me to space zucchini plants 3 feet apart. I figured he was just being fussy, so I planted four in a 4x4 bed last spring. By mid-July in Boise, they were a tangled mess with powdery mildew on every leaf, and I got maybe 5 squashes total. This year I gave them the full 3 feet and one plant alone has already given me 12, so Rick was right and I owe him a jar of pickles.
