Just realized my broccoli beds failed because I planted them too close to the tomatoes

I put them three inches apart last April in Richmond and ended up with tiny heads and no side shoots, so now I'm digging out half the plants to give them more space before fall planting, has anyone else had weird companion planting fails like that?

Man I always thought spacing didn't matter that much but you just changed my whole view on it. Gonna go measure my garden beds right now.

Honestly yeah same here, I used to just eyeball everything and wonder why stuff got all crowded.

Gotta disagree with you a little on this one. Broccoli and tomatoes are actually pretty good companions since tomatoes repel cabbage worms, and the real issue here was just the spacing. Three inches apart is way too tight for any brassica, you need at least 18 inches minimum or you'll always get those tiny heads no matter what you plant next to them lol.
