Raised beds sound great until you deal with the actual dirt situation. Mine dried out so fast the first year that I was watering twice a day in July, which kind of defeats the whole point of an easy garden. In-ground beds with decent soil hold water way better, and you get earthworms doing the work for you instead of paying for bags of mix every spring. Your neighbor might know his stuff, but two seasons is a real cost to learn it.
Raised beds do dry out faster but that is actually fixable and not a reason to give up on them. Mulch on top cuts the watering way down, and once your mix has a few seasons of compost worked in it holds water much better than that first year. @the_claire the earthworm point only works if your ground soil is good to start with, and a lot of us have clay or rock or old fill dirt that worms will not touch. My in-ground rows were a soggy mess in spring and baked hard in summer, so the beds gave me control I never had before. Two seasons of learning is annoying but it beats fighting bad ground forever.
