Overheard a guy at the garden center say you should never plant tomatoes in the same spot two years in a row

I shook it off at first but then I looked it up and turns out he was dead right about soil diseases building up, now I'm rotating my whole patch this spring has anyone else ignored crop rotation and paid for it later?
