Pro tip: my neighbor in Billings said to quit watering my tomatoes every morning, and she was right
She said the roots go shallow if you feed them a little drink daily, so I cut back to a deep soak twice a week and the cracked fruit cleared up by August, but now I'm second-guessing the same logic for my peppers, so has anyone run the twice-a-week soak on peppers with good results?
The shallow roots thing is only half the story. Plants send out shallow feeder roots when you water light and often, sure, but they also build deeper roots over time if the top inch dries out between waterings. So the fix isn't just cutting back, it's watering deep enough that the water actually gets down past the shallow root zone. Peppers handle twice a week fine in most cases, but they're fussier than tomatoes about big swings in soil moisture, so watch for blossom end rot if your soil drains fast. Also keep in mind that cracked tomatoes are usually from uneven water, not from daily watering itself, so going to two soaks helped because it evened things out, not because daily is bad on its own.
