Spent 2 seasons thinning carrots wrong, a radish set me straight
I always thinned my carrot rows by pulling the tiny ones, leaving about an inch between sprouts. Last July I planted a row of radishes next to them as a marker crop, since they pop up fast. When I pulled a radish that was crowding its neighbor, I noticed it had barely grown, but the ones I left alone with 3 inches of space were twice the size. That's when it hit me that I'd been yanking the wrong carrots this whole time, the ones I left were stunting each other and never got past finger length. I dug up a row I'd thinned my usual way and compared it to one I'd replanted with proper spacing, night and day difference. Now I use a tiny ruler or a stick with marks to space every seedling, feels ridiculous but my October harvest was triple what I got in August. Has anyone else figured out a dumb gardening habit after seeing a comparison crop do the teaching for them?
