Thought raised beds were a waste until I tried them after 5 years of row gardening

I spent five years planting everything in straight rows in my backyard clay soil here in Nashville. Tomatoes always looked sad and my zucchini barely made it past July. Last spring I finally built three 4x8 raised beds using untreated pine from Lowe's cost me about $60 each. Filled them with a mix of topsoil compost and peat moss. The difference was immediate my tomatoes grew twice as big and I got peppers all the way into October. That clay soil just stays too wet and compacted for roots to breathe. Has anyone else switched and regretted not doing it sooner?

Exactly like you said that clay soil stays too wet and compacted, raised beds totally fix that drainage issue. I switched after two years of fighting the same problem and my plants stopped drowning every time it rained. Adding perlite to your mix helps even more with aeration if you ever top off the beds later.

And the perlite really makes a difference for sure. I mix a ton in now.
