TIL my tomato plants need way more water than I thought

Found a chart from the local extension office showing they can drink over a gallon a day in peak summer heat. Anyone else have a good way to check if the soil is actually wet enough down deep?

So you think they're doing long distance, @the_alice? Mine are definitely on a sprint training plan. They shoot up overnight, then just sit there looking tired for a week. Maybe they need better carbs.

Used to think mine were lazy until I saw them put out flowers after a good rain.
