TIL that coffee grounds actually do keep slugs off my kale, and I feel silly for doubting my neighbor
My neighbor Doris in Eugene has been telling me for two summers to save my coffee grounds for the garden, and I always nodded along while thinking it was just old wives' tale stuff. I finally caved about 6 weeks ago because slugs were shredding my kale and I was picking off 15 to 20 of them every single morning before work. I started sprinkling used grounds in a ring around each plant, maybe a quarter inch thick, and within 3 days the damage basically stopped. I checked at night with a flashlight twice and found exactly one slug, compared to the little convention I used to host out there. The grounds also seem to be keeping the soil a bit looser, though that could just be me wanting it to be true. I'm not saying it beats a proper barrier or anything, but for something I was throwing in the trash anyway, it's hard to argue. Has anyone tried this with peppers or beans, or does it only work because kale leaves sit so low to the ground?
