Unpopular opinion: it took me 14 months to figure out my tomatoes were getting fried by my own mulch
Three summers in a row my Roma tomatoes would grow fine until July, then the leaves would curl up and go crispy from the bottom, and I blamed blight, bugs, the heat, everything except the black landscape fabric I stapled down around them. I finally pulled the fabric back last June and stuck a $12 soil thermometer in there, and it read 104 degrees while the bare dirt two feet away sat at 81. The roots were basically baking in a slow oven, and no amount of watering was going to fix that. Swapped it for straw and the same plants pushed new growth in nine days. Has anyone else cooked their own garden by accident, or am I the only one who did this for three straight summers?
