Found out 1 in 4 drivers admit to parking in a handicap spot without a permit - that stat blew my mind

I was scrolling through some traffic study online last night and stumbled on a stat that says 24% of drivers actually confess to parking in a handicap spot without a permit. I found it on a government site about parking enforcement data from 2022. That means almost 1 out of every 4 people you see in a parking lot might be illegally using those blue spaces. On one hand, it makes me wonder if the fines are too low to scare people off. But on the other hand, maybe we just need more enforcement like cameras or patrols. I personally saw a guy park in a spot with a cone covering the sign last week at the grocery store, and he just moved the cone and left. What do you all think - is the fine too weak or do people just not care about the rules?

Man that stat hits hard. It's the kind of thing that makes you lose a little faith in people, especially when you see someone just move a cone like that. Fines probably need to be steeper, but honestly some folks just think the rules don't apply to them.

Whoa, hold on, I mean is it really that serious though? @jake638 I get it's annoying when people park in those spots, but like 1 in 4 drivers admitting to it seems high but maybe the survey was weird. Idk, maybe it's just me but I feel like sometimes people park there for like two minutes to grab something quick and then leave, which is wrong but not the end of the world. Plus fines are already like 250 bucks in my state and that's pretty steep for most people I know. Not saying it's okay, just wondering if we're overreacting a little to this stat.
