Rant: the guy who backed into the spot at my gym vs the one who pulled in nose first, and I know which one I want to key
Last Tuesday at the Planet Fitness on Millbrook in Raleigh, I watched a woman in a silver minivan back into a spot between two cars in under 30 seconds, straight as an arrow, no drama. Twenty feet away, a guy in a lifted truck pulled in nose first at an angle, hung his rear bumper a full 3 feet into the driving lane, and just walked off like he had done something great. Backing in is not harder, it is just scarier for people who never learned, and that fear is why the rest of us have to swerve around their bumper every single morning. Why do people act like pulling straight in is the safe choice when it leaves half the lot blocked?
I love that the minivan lady is the hero of this story and the truck guy is the villain, feels about right. The part that gets me is the confidence, like he climbed out of that truck thinking he nailed it while his bumper is out there living its own life in the lane. Backing in takes maybe 20 extra seconds and saves everybody else from playing dodgeball with a trailer hitch. The people who pull straight in and hang out are the same ones who park diagonally at the grocery store and act like the lines are just suggestions. Honestly the woman in the minivan should be teaching a class at that gym.
