Rant: heard my roommate's girlfriend tell him to just leave dishes 'soaking' for 3 days and I knew it was over
I was in the hallway outside our kitchen two weeks ago and heard her say 'just fill the sink with water and deal with it later' about a pile of pans from Tuesday. Fast forward 4 days and that water was basically soup, plus the smell had moved into the living room. The best part is my roommate then told me I was being 'dramatic' for asking him to run the disposal. We had a bug guy come out to our place in Columbus last spring and he said standing water in a sink is one of the top 3 things he gets called for. I'm not saying she's the problem, but her advice sure didn't help. Has anyone here had to draw a hard line on dishes with someone who thinks soaking is a plan?
And the thing is, it's never just about the dishes. Once you let the sink become a science experiment, it spreads. First it's the smell, then it's the fruit flies, then it's the ants, and next thing you know you're the bad guy for saying something. Your roommate calling you dramatic is the real red flag here, because he's basically telling you your standards are the problem, not the rotting food water sitting in your kitchen. That bug guy wasn't joking either, standing water is like a welcome mat for every pest in the building. So no, you're not being dramatic. You're being a normal person who doesn't want to live in a swamp. Time to set a real rule, like dishes get done same day or they go in his room, because talking nicely clearly isn't working.
