Vent: my sister said to just talk to my roommate about the dishes, and that advice bombed
My sister Deb told me last month to sit my roommate down and talk about his dishes instead of just doing them myself. So I tried it on a Tuesday, listed the 11 plates and 6 cups stacked by our sink in Austin, and he said "ok" then did nothing for 4 more days. He actually went out and bought paper plates after that, which I guess is a solution, but the pots are still there. Has anyone had the direct talk actually work, or is it always like this?
Expects way too much from one talk. People act like a single sit down changes years of habits and it just doesn't. Your roommate heard you, said ok, and then showed you his real answer, which was paper plates. That's him saying the dishes problem is yours to care about, not his. The pots are still there because you keep doing them, so why would he ever touch a sponge? If you want the pots gone you either stop washing them and let them rot, or you move out. The talk isn't magic, the follow through is.
