My mom said my sourdough starter is 'just weird flour paste' and now I'm second guessing everything

I was over at my mom's place last Sunday showing her my starter that I've been feeding for like 3 months. She looked at it and goes 'isn't that just flour and water that's gone bad? why not just buy yeast at the store?' and honestly it kind of hit me weird. Like I spend all this time measuring and discarding and feeding and I couldn't even explain why it matters when she asked. Has anyone else had a family member totally dismiss their baking project and make you wonder if you're overcomplicating things?

Oh man, I actually read somewhere that sourdough starter is basically a whole ecosystem of wild yeast and bacteria, so it's way more complex than just "bad flour paste." Maybe your mom just hasn't seen how amazing the bread turns out yet!

Yeah the "whole ecosystem" thing is real. My buddy Mike tried to convince me his kombucha SCOBY was basically a pet and I laughed at him until I accidentally left mine out for two weeks and it grew this weird fuzzy mold that looked like a tiny forest. He was not sympathetic. Anyway I think your mom is just jealous because you have a project that doesn't involve her checking in on it every five minutes like I bet she does with everything else in your life.
