My sourdough starter looked dead for 3 days then tripled overnight on day 4

I almost dumped it out Wednesday morning after zero bubbles since Sunday. Has anyone else had a starter that suddenly came alive after seeming totally dead?

Yeast can definitely handle some chlorine, it's not that fragile.

Has anyone checked if your water source might be the issue? In my experience, tap water with too much chlorine can mess with a starter for days. I had a similar thing happen where mine looked dead until I switched to filtered water. Your flour might also be a factor, different brands have different amounts of natural yeast. The day 4 explosion sounds like it just needed more time to get going, sometimes the lag phase is longer if the starter is adjusting to new conditions. Your mileage may vary but I'd bet it was more about the water or flour than anything wrong with your starter itself.

It's funny how much small details like water can totally change things.
